It was during her time at Illinois State University that she met the love of her life and husband of 22 years, State Senator Elgie Sims, Jr. (Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated-Eta Tau).  Together they have built a wonderful life including two beautiful daughters, Kennedy (18) and Mackenzie (14).

Shivonne has dedicated her time and energy for the past twenty-seven years to serving her community through her profession with the past twenty-three years spent as a Field Probation Officer for the Circuit Court of Cook County Juvenile Probation in the Austin Community.  Working tirelessly with children/teenagers and their families to redirect young people away from the penal system before reaching adulthood.  To promote the progress of her department, Shivonne recently accepted an opportunity as a C5 Administrator.  In her internal role she will now work as a troubleshooter for Field Officers while helping to improve that segment of the agency’s productivity.

Shivonne is funny, witty and super smart.  She will tell you in a minute, “Don’t mess with my family, my food, my friends or anything related to Alpha Kappa Alpha.”  She loves our beloved sorority and with her busy life, she finds time to serve when, where and as often as she can.  These attributes sprinkled with her no nonsense approach to taking care of business, has garnered her love and respect in her own right.  Over the years, Shivonne has served on the Membership, Social and Program Committees and this year she looks forward to serving on the Connections Committee.  Currently, Shivonne has been busy preparing her eldest daughter, Debutant Kennedy for our Shades of Pink Cotillion.

Her love for her family and friends is unconditional.  As a working mother of two busy teens and the wife of a government official, Shivonne is constantly on the go.  Whether it’s a recital, an inauguration or a night out with her Line Sisters, she is there.  Serving alongside her husband whenever she’s needed and at times, at a moments notice, Shivonne is always prepared, an attribute she has shown since her initiation nearly twenty-three years ago.  She will give you the shirt off of your back and she will also tell you the truth in love.  In her spare time of course Shivonne likes to relax and traveling is at the top of her list. Long getaways with her family or alone with her husband, she is always ready for anywhere warm and beautiful.  Shivonne is the smallest STAR with the biggest heart in every way.  To know her is to love her, and to love her is because you know her.

Ms. Shawanda Jennings, also known as "Shay" is lovingly known as the Heart of S.I.S.I.S.because of her ability to bring them all together. She is the planner and usually the driver, because she expects things to be done in an orderly fashion. She sets the date, coordinates the plan and everyone falls into place, trusting her leadership. Similarly she is the heart of her family. You can find her in her parents' kitchen cooking on holidays, hanging out with her family and their bowling league on a Wednesday or Saturday night or just curled up in her bed watching a movie with the one who holds heart, her son Tremont.

Shawanda attended the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana for her undergraduate degree and completed a second Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. She has dedicated 25 years of service to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and has been a pillar of sisterly example since joining Phi Epsilon Omega Chapter. As a Social Worker with Ounce, it is her heart that drives her decision making. Always working for the best interests of children and families. She is also a sister who never seeks the spotlight that she deserves and is equal part exceptional and humble. Small in stature, but Mighty in Heart!
